The following list contains identity theft prevention, protection and recovery information available for each of the fifty states plus American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
In most states and territories, the Attorney General (or the jurisdictional equivalent of the Attorney General) is the authority victims should contact for assistance and information in addition to the local police department.
Victims and non-victims alike should become familiar with your state’s resources as each state differs in the types of services offered. For example, while most states offer credit freezes, a number do not and there are variations in the procedures for those that do.
